To respec or not respec, that is the question.
Posted by Bansidhe on February 23rd, 2008 filed in Life in GeneralI’ve been sitting here for the last hour pondering whether or not I should take Bansidhe and respec. I’m pretty much your standard Affliction-based PVE warlock simply because I fear re-speccing. As embarrassing as it is, here’s why.
One, I’ve been reading various sites which rattle off things like coefficients and percentages, and to be quite honest, my head hurts. I know there are tons of people out there who are good at the whole calculating percentages, factoring coefficients, using an abacus, so on, and so forth. I, however, read all that and my brain shuts down completely. (Yes, I know some of you are thinking, “WTF is an abacus?” Those of you that know what one is are probably thinking, “Who the heck still uses an abacus?” To this day, my mother keeps an abacus with her checkbook.)
Two, I’m not an auditory learner by any means so talking to me about x, y, and z does no good. I get about three sentences into all that an my brain pretty much goes somewhere tropical, and the rest becomes the Wa Wa Wa Wa Wa Wa noise from the old Charlie Brown specials. Do you hear me, He Who Can Spout a Crapload of Facts regarding WoW and Make his Sister’s Head Hurt, Tenryuu??? (insert fist shaking here) Don’t you dare try and discuss this with me over breakfast tomorrow!
Three, as much as I do want to improve my character, I sink enough of my time outside of gaming into data analysis. Here is where I could wax poetically about No Child Left Behind, also known as No Teacher Left Sober, but I won’t. Suffice it to say, I analyze a crapload of data regarding my students on a daily basis, and I just don’t want to have to do it in a game.
So, after my research, I’m no further along than I was an hour ago. I’ll figure it out eventually.

Hehe I’ve never seen that before… your character in armory says its “untalented” :P
My advice - play around! Spec, respec, spec again. I think you might be a little light on crit and spell hit to get the most out of a destro build (just imo), but you’d totally do justice to a demonology build (and you obviously already know how to play affliction). So, if you wanted a change, that would be my suggestion - try out demonology, see what you think, and spend some time collecting gear and gems to try out a destruction build later. Or just go destruction straight up - its still a fun build regardless of your gear.
My number 1 bit of advice would be to get your Spell Hit as close as humanly possible to 202 regardless of your build (umm if you want more maths on why and how, I have a couple of posts on my site about it but I’m trying to keep in the spirit of keeping it simple as per your post).
Bottom line tho - don’t be scared of a re-spec, its like rolling a new character, and provided you don’t overdo it, its really not that expensive.

TeePee sent me over here and all I can say is “wOw!” — Great blog!
Regarding respeccing, try it all. You never know what you will like and what will fit into your play style. wowwiki.com has some nice sample builds, as does the Warlock’s Den (wowmb.net). The Den also is a very friendly place to boot.
Finally, try downloading the PTR client as a way to test new talent builds. You start out unspecced for free, and you won’t be wasting any of the real (err.. or is it ‘fake’) gold on your experiements.
@TeePee ‘rolling a new charachter’ - I love it. This is so correct. I can’t wait for WotLK and I can change my hair. Then we’ll see REAL change!

My advice:
While the raid build of “choice” still often winds up being affliction,
there are some definate advantages to raiding as a Demo lock…Destro locks are OK, but they are still, in many ways, the weak sisters of lock specs…
One experiment I would recommend is go down in the affliction tree to 2/2 in nightfall (17) and 44 demo and see how you like it…You can check Anyette of Earthen Ring on the Armory to see most of the spec(she’s just 69, but that’s also the spec my guild leader uses for raiding). And play around with the points in Demo…I need to go back and clean things up because I took talents that fit my play style leveling that won’t work the same when I’m raiding.
